Background |
Despite the risk of sounding trite, I would use just one word to describe both my professional and personal background - DIVERSE.
My story began in Canada when my mother, a Slovak, and my (biological) father, a Czech, met in Toronto (the Huron word for "meeting place").
They had emigrated separately from Czechoslovakia after the Prague Spring of 1968 and decided to start a family on the shores of one of the most culturaly diverse cities in North America.
Since that time, I've been fortunate enough to meet many types of people, and live in several different countries, always keeping in mind to absorb as much as possible. From early childhood behind the "Iron Curtain," and adolescence in a prestigious all-boys school in England, to the working life in Ohio's poorest county, my brief journey has brought me full circle, so to speak, back to northeast Ohio, less than 300 miles from where it all started.
The same can be said for my professional background. My first job was as a freelance writer for the Bratislava Pravda, to this day Slovakia's largest and most-respected daily. Back then, my features focused on life as a teen in America, which with the fall of communism in 1989, had become a topic of considerable interest to Pravda readers.
Now, more than a decade later, and after a variety of jobs - including work as a translator, sports editor, Web editor, advertising copy writer, and journalism instructor - I am once again back in Northeast Ohio, but this time utilizing all the skills learnt from places passed, as a Web developer with an multimedia solutions provider in downtown Cleveland.
