I am a journalist by trade, but more often than not, I like to think of myself in more general terms - as a communicator. In j-school, we were constantly reminded of our responsibilities as "gatekeepers of information" and presenting facts in an unbiased, logical manner.
However, our efforts as communicators are often scrutinized - be it by politicians, preachers, professionals or private citizens - but our commitment to providing timely and accurate information does not diminish.
If there is one place Freedom of the Press is taken for granted, it is here in the United States. Freedom of the Press, and more specifically the freedom to exchange information, is one of the basic principles of democracy. I feel it is my duty not only as a communicator, but as a human being, to help uphold those principles.
